First, confirm and date the pregnancy
A home urine test is a good first indicator, but an ultrasound shows how far along the pregnancy is and where it is located. The number of weeks matters because it affects which options are open to you. If you have severe one-sided pain or dizziness, seek care at once, because that can signal an ectopic pregnancy.
The choices
You may continue the pregnancy and parent, continue it and place the child for adoption, or end it. There is no single right answer, and anyone who pressures you toward one, whether a relative, a partner or a clinic, is not serving you. A counselling conversation can help you sort out what you want. You can read more in what to do first with an unplanned pregnancy.
If ending the pregnancy is what you want
Options and timing are explained in abortion in Delhi, including medical and surgical methods. Your consent as an adult is the one that matters under the law, as explained on the MTP page.
If you feel unsafe
If the pregnancy is connected to coercion, violence or abuse, tell the doctor so they can support your safety. In an emergency call 112. The national Women Helpline (181) operates in many states, though availability can vary.
Afterwards
Whatever you decide, planning contraception and follow-up care helps protect your health. Aftercare explains what recovery looks like.

Taking the first practical steps
- Confirm the pregnancy and the weeks. A urine test, then an ultrasound, confirms the pregnancy, its location and how far along it is.
- Understand the time limits. Options and legal conditions change at 9, 12, 20 and 24 weeks. See options by week of pregnancy.
- Talk to someone you trust, or to a doctor. You do not have to tell family if you are an adult.
- Take the time you have. Pressure from anyone, including a clinic, is not a good sign.
If you decide to continue the pregnancy
Start antenatal care early, take folic acid as advised, and ask your doctor about any health conditions. If you cannot raise a child, adoption is a lawful route through registered agencies; ask the doctor or a social worker to explain the process.
If you decide to end the pregnancy
Read how medical abortion and surgical abortion differ, and what the law requires in MTP in India. If you are unmarried, see abortion for unmarried women.
Common questions
Can I speak to someone before deciding anything?
Yes. A consultation is for information and counselling as well as treatment. Booking one does not commit you to a procedure.
Do I have to decide on the first visit?
No. You can ask questions, take time and come back. Just be aware that some options narrow as weeks pass.
Can I come alone?
Yes. You may come alone or bring someone you trust.
