Myth 1: Abortion is illegal in India
Fact: It is lawful under the MTP Act, within set weeks and conditions. See the MTP Act explained.
Myth 2: It makes you infertile
Fact: An uncomplicated abortion is not known to reduce later fertility. Untreated infection or retained tissue can cause problems, so follow-up matters.
Myth 3: Only married women can have one
Fact: The law applies to all women. See abortion for unmarried women.
Myth 4: Pills from a chemist are the same as a clinic abortion
Fact: The medicine may be the same, but the safety is not. A scan, correct dates, a check for ectopic pregnancy and a follow-up are the safety. See medical abortion.
Myth 5: A husband or parent must sign
Fact: For an adult, only her own consent is required.
Myth 6: Everyone will find out
Fact: The Act bars doctors from revealing a woman's name and particulars except as authorised by law.
Myth 7: It is always dangerous
Fact: When done early by trained doctors in a suitable facility, abortion is a safe procedure and serious complications are uncommon. Know the warning signs in aftercare.
