Frequently asked questions

Short, general answers to the questions people most often ask before an abortion or MTP consultation.

Is abortion legal in India?

Yes, under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, within set gestation limits and conditions. See the MTP Act explained.

Do I need my husband's or parents' consent?

For an adult woman, only her own consent is needed. A guardian's consent is required if the patient is under 18.

Is my information kept private?

The Act restricts disclosure of a woman's details except as authorised by law. Read how this site handles your information in the privacy policy.

Methods

How do I know which method suits me?

It depends on weeks of pregnancy, your health and your preference, after an examination and scan. See surgical vs medical abortion.

Can I take abortion pills on my own?

This is not recommended. Without a scan, an ectopic pregnancy cannot be ruled out, and dosing and timing need medical guidance. See medical abortion.

What is second-trimester MTP?

Termination after 12 weeks, with tighter legal conditions and hospital-level care. See second-trimester MTP.

Cost and visit

How much does it cost?

It varies with method, gestation and tests, and a price can only be given after assessment. See what affects the price.

What should I bring?

Any previous scan reports, a list of medicines you take, and the date of your last period. Bring a trusted person if you wish.

Afterwards

What happens after an abortion?

Bleeding and cramps that settle over days, a period in about four to six weeks, and a follow-up visit. See aftercare.

When should I seek urgent care?

For soaking two large pads an hour for two hours, severe pain, fever over 24 hours, foul discharge or fainting. Go to an emergency department or call 112.

When can I get pregnant again?

Possibly within two weeks. Start contraception promptly and speak with your doctor about options.

More common questions

How many weeks is abortion allowed in India?

Up to 20 weeks with one registered doctor's opinion, and 20 to 24 weeks with two doctors' opinion for listed categories. Beyond 24 weeks only a State Medical Board can allow it, for substantial fetal abnormalities. See options by week of pregnancy.

Can an unmarried woman have an abortion in India?

Yes. The law applies to all women, and the Supreme Court held in 2022 that married and unmarried women are treated alike. See abortion for unmarried women.

Up to how many weeks can I take the abortion pill?

In India the standard regimen is approved up to 9 weeks (63 days), after a doctor has examined you and confirmed the pregnancy with a scan.

Does abortion affect future fertility?

An uncomplicated abortion, medical or surgical, is not known to reduce later fertility. Untreated infection or retained tissue can cause problems, which is why follow-up matters.

Is it safe to buy abortion pills online or from a chemist?

It is not advised. Without a scan an ectopic pregnancy cannot be excluded, the weeks may be wrong, and there is no one to call if bleeding is heavy. Read medical abortion.

How do I choose a safe abortion clinic?

Check the doctor's registration, ask whether the facility is approved for MTP, make sure you are examined and scanned first, and get an itemised cost. See how to choose a clinic.
