How weeks are counted
Doctors count pregnancy from the first day of your last menstrual period, not from the day of conception. If your cycles are irregular or you are unsure of the date, an ultrasound gives a more reliable figure. Never guess your weeks when choosing a method.
Options and rules by stage
| Weeks | Usual options | Approval | Setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 9 | Medical abortion or vacuum aspiration | One registered doctor | Clinic or hospital |
| 9 to 12 | Vacuum aspiration | One registered doctor | Clinic or hospital |
| 12 to 20 | Medicine-induced or D&E, see second-trimester MTP | One registered doctor | Hospital |
| 20 to 24 | Hospital procedure | Two doctors, listed categories only | Hospital |
| Over 24 | Only for substantial fetal abnormality | State Medical Board | Hospital |
If your scan cannot yet show the pregnancy
Very early, a scan may not show where the pregnancy is. The doctor may ask you to return in a week and will explain which symptoms need urgent attention, since an ectopic pregnancy must be excluded before any treatment.
Why earlier is simpler
Earlier abortion generally involves a shorter process, fewer complications and a quicker recovery, and it keeps all options open, including the choice of method. That is a reason to seek an assessment promptly, not a reason to feel rushed into a decision. Read about choices in an unplanned pregnancy.

Common questions
Can I have an abortion at 6 weeks?
Yes, if an ultrasound confirms a pregnancy inside the womb and you are suitable. Medical abortion or vacuum aspiration may both be options.
Can I have an abortion at 10 weeks?
Yes. At this stage vacuum aspiration is commonly used, since the standard abortion-pill regimen is approved only up to 9 weeks.
Is abortion possible at 20 weeks?
Yes, with one registered doctor's opinion, in a hospital-level setting.
What if I am past 24 weeks?
Only a State Medical Board can allow termination, where there are substantial fetal abnormalities. Seek medical advice immediately.
