1. Pause and breathe
Strong feelings are normal whatever you end up deciding. If you can, speak to one person you trust. You are not obliged to tell anyone else.
2. Work out how far along you are
Count weeks from the first day of your last period. If your cycles are irregular, this can be off, so an ultrasound gives a more reliable number. Gestation matters because it shapes the choices described on our abortion options page.
3. Look after your health now
If you plan to continue the pregnancy, start folic acid and review any regular medicines with a doctor. If you are unsure, it is still wise to avoid alcohol and tobacco in the meantime. Seek urgent help for severe one-sided pain, heavy bleeding or fainting.
4. Get information, not pressure
Speak to a doctor or counsellor who will explain all options without steering you. Be sceptical of anyone who promises a quick fix, asks for money before examining you, or tells you that you must decide immediately.
5. Understand your rights
As an adult, the decision is yours, and the law protects your privacy. See the MTP Act explained for the key rules. If you want to talk through your situation, unwanted pregnancy care explains how consultations work.
